Abstract

Alexander the Great is widely regarded as the most prolific general, conqueror, and king of antiquity. Because of his vast accomplishments via multiple forms of leadership, a strong argument can be made for Alexander the Great being the “greatest” leader in all of history. By examining his accomplishments in key battles such as Issus and Gaugamela, Alexander’s unparalleled battle prowess comes to light. He was an excellent governor as well, establishing a progressive empire and legacy. While leaders such as Napoleon and Constantine come close, Alexander the Great emerges as a paragon of leadership and an example for future leaders.

PETER TOTO'S SENIOR THESIS

ABOUT ME

I have been a Northern Virginia resident my entire life. After bouncing around a multitude of both public and private schools in the area, I eventually wound up at the Wakefield School in The Plains where I completed my senior year of high school. In the future, I hope to study Political Science and Ancient History, and eventually American Law.

Why I chose this topic

The classical-Hellenistic period has been my favorite part of history since I was quite young. My affection for the era was solidified in the early stages of the Western Civilization class of my freshman year. I have always appreciated the greatest war heroes of history, but Alexander has been my go-to since I started high school. War was much more fascinating in the Hellenistic sweet spot of history. The bronze armor, the plumed helmets, the heroic capes, the hoplites, the chariots, the swords, the shields, and the javelins are all relics of more athletic and graceful warfare. I think it’s important to look at Alexander and remember the heroic feats we once performed and think about where we truly want to be today.
